The German light artist Philipp Geist developed a multimedia installation entitled “Feldkirch Fades” for the historic centre of Feldkirch. Using large-format projectors and precisely fitting video mapping, the square at the intersection of Neustadt and Marokkanerstraße, the façade of the old Dogana and parts of the western façade of the Schattenburg become an immersive urban light space in which visitors can submerse themselves. The interplay of light, sound, space and movement creates an overall experience that opens up new perspectives on the familiar area as it is walked through. Geist integrates words and concepts relating to the meaning of the place that residents and visitors were invited to submit. The realization of the collected concepts in typographic image compositions generates an abstract, painterly effect and is vitally connected to the place and the people who shape it. The gathered words are briefly visible and then disappear again. As immaterial projection surfaces, they symbolize thoughts, visions and inspirations, but also stand as a metaphor for transience.
